NYCHA Addresses Asbestos Contamination at Marcy Houses

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) announced that it has removed all asbestos found at Brooklyn’s Marcy Houses following a recent steam leak. The incident, which affected the public housing complex in Bedford-Stuyvesant, left asbestos-laden residue on some exterior walls at buildings located at 502 and 504 Marcy Avenue.

Response to Resident Complaints

Both NYCHA and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection visited the site after several residents reported concerns about asbestos contamination, with some stating they had lodged complaints for weeks. In addition to the asbestos issue, the steam leak caused some buildings within the complex to lose heat and hot water.

Relocation and Restoration Efforts

As a precaution, the city temporarily relocated four of the 23 households living near the affected exterior walls until October 31. Another household chose to stay with family members during the cleanup. City officials reported that heat and hot water were restored to four impacted buildings by 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, and to the remaining five buildings shortly after midnight.

Comprehensive Air Monitoring Results

To ensure resident safety, 24 air monitors were installed in the apartments adjacent to the affected area. Tests conducted on Friday confirmed that all monitors returned negative results for asbestos within the living spaces. Additional air quality checks at the complex's daycare, management office, and the exteriors of Buildings 4 and 17 also detected no asbestos.

Residents have received notifications regarding the negative asbestos test results. NYCHA spokesperson Andrew Sklar stated, "To date, all air monitoring test results have been negative for asbestos, including exterior and interior apartment testing, and air monitoring of exterior areas will continue until remediation is complete.”

Ongoing Environmental Cleanup

The Department of Environmental Protection has completed cleanup efforts on sidewalks, cars, and building facades at Marcy Houses, but work in the courtyard remains unfinished. The city confirmed its commitment to continue environmental testing around the complex until all areas are confirmed clear of contamination.

Looking Ahead for Public Housing Safety

City officials emphasized the continued efforts toward public housing safety and environmental cleanup at Marcy Houses. The office of Mayor Zohran Mamdani did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the asbestos removal. NYCHA has committed to ongoing monitoring until all affected exterior areas are fully remediated.
