ICE Shooting in Marble Hill Triggers Community Uproar

A man was shot by ICE agents in Marble Hill, Manhattan on Thursday night, igniting outrage and protests across the community. The incident, which took place in Upper Manhattan, has led to the arrest of four protesters and a new wave of demonstrations demanding answers and accountability from law enforcement.

Shooting Incident and Aftermath

According to officials, Oscar Belgal was shot by an ICE agent and rushed to a local hospital with a bullet wound to the neck. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that Belgal, who reportedly has a criminal history, rammed two vehicles and had previously evaded agents. The shooting took place as ICE was attempting to apprehend him, but details about the confrontation remain under investigation.

Around 11 p.m. Thursday, ICE agents removed Belgal from the hospital in unmarked vehicles. On Friday, Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin confirmed that Belgal was transferred to a more secure facility outside New York.

Community Protests and Police Response

Following the shooting, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the hospital, shouting as ICE vehicles departed and continuing their demonstration late into the night. The demonstration drew a significant police response as crowds spilled onto surrounding streets. Four protesters were arrested on charges of obstructing governmental administration and were issued court appearance tickets.

Another protest is scheduled for Friday at 5:30 p.m. in Foley Square, with activists calling for accountability from ICE and for the agency to leave New York entirely.

Community Leaders and Residents Voice Concerns

The incident has sparked widespread outrage among Marble Hill residents and community leaders. Residents like Yeika Oliva voiced concerns about human rights, stating, "Whether they're citizens or not, we are all human. And it's not fair that it has to come to this." Another local resident questioned the way Belgal was treated, especially with a child present in the vehicle during the incident.

Rev. Calvin Hayden of New Mount Calvary Baptist Church also raised questions about law enforcement practices, noting that one ICE agent at the scene was holding an assault rifle and wore what appeared to be a construction vest with no clear identification. "If you are who you say you are, ICE or any law enforcement for that matter, you should be able to identify yourself as being ICE," Hayden said. "For the fact that we're in construction gear with no identification, that's really disturbing."

Conflicting Descriptions of Oscar Belgal

While DHS highlighted Belgal's criminal history, some neighbors provided a different perspective. Jahzea Prince, a neighborhood resident, described Belgal as "my friendly neighbor" and "a good guy," expressing personal sympathy for his situation. "I know he had a kid. You see him all the time on the block. I really send my condolences to him personally," Prince said.

Calls for Accountability and Ongoing Investigation

Community leaders and residents continue to demand transparency regarding the ice shooting in Marble Hill. Detectives are currently seeking surveillance footage of the incident as calls for accountability grow louder. The upcoming protest in Foley Square emphasizes not only community outrage over the handling of the incident but also broader concerns about human rights and law enforcement practices in the community.
