Introduction: Revisiting an Iconic Underdog Story

The upcoming film 'I Play Rocky' shines a spotlight on the challenges faced by Sylvester Stallone as he fought to bring the legendary character of Rocky Balboa to the silver screen nearly five decades ago. With Anthony Ippolito taking on the role of Stallone and Peter Farrelly directing, the movie delves into a behind-the-scenes look at the making of an American classic.

The Road to 'Rocky': Sylvester Stallone's Journey

The film rewinds to a time before Rocky became a household name, focusing on Stallone's life as a struggling, unknown actor and an aspiring screenwriter. Hollywood shown interest in Stallone's screenplay for Rocky, but not on the terms Stallone insisted upon, leading to a period marked by personal struggle and isolation.

Anthony Ippolito Takes on the Role of Stallone

For Anthony Ippolito, portraying Sylvester Stallone offered both a challenge and an honor. In an interview with entertainment reporter Joelle Garguilo, Ippolito described the significance of receiving Stallone’s blessing for the role. "Being able to speak to Stallone and to have him being willing to time and share this with me... it's a vulnerable thing to go into that period of time in his life that was very dark and isolated. And he suffered through so much that to be able to hear his telling of it about, you know, 50 years later, I just felt very, very, very honored," Ippolito said.

The Need for Authenticity in Casting

Director Peter Farrelly, an Oscar winner, stated that finding the right actor to play Stallone was crucial for the movie's impact. "The biggest thing was we had to have somebody be the perfect Stallone. This script is the best script I ever got sent to me. But if you don't have the perfect Rocky, you're gonna be like, 'yeah, it's kind of a good story, but the guy was like, you know, I didn't buy it.' You had to have a guy who found the inner Stallone and didn't do a caricature of him. And Anthony Ippolito did that, and he did it on his own," Farrelly said.

Anthony Ippolito's Unconventional Path to the Role

Ippolito was not among those initially considered for the part. Instead, he took initiative after reading about the film's development. "Nobody was asking me to audition, so I kind of made my own audition, own thing, and kinda sent it their way," he explained. That audition, recorded in his grandmother's Long Island basement, impressed Farrelly immediately. "He was it," Farrelly recounted. "People ask me, they go, 'how, how... you were so brave to take a chance.' I said, 'I didn't take a chance. It wasn't a doubt. It was a 100%.'"

The Impact of 'I Play Rocky'

With its focus on perseverance against long odds, 'I Play Rocky' offers audiences a window into the real-life struggles behind one of cinema's most enduring characters. The movie aims to shed light on both Stallone’s creative vision and the relentless determination that carried his screenplay from obscurity to box office success.
