Captain Pike Returns in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3
Paramount+ has officially released the trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 ahead of its premiere in July 2025. For months, fans have been clamoring for more details and new footage for the third season of the latest Trek series, but they were only offered a single teaser trailer back in April.
Season 2 ended with an explosive cliffhanger, as the Enterprise was attacked by the Gorn during an invasion of a Federation colony world. The warlike species boarded the ship, killing several crew members and taking several others hostage along with the other survivors. Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) was ordered by Starfleet to stand down, but the first episode preview suggests Pike will attempt to take action against Starfleet orders to rescue the hostages. This will no doubt have far-reaching consequences for the captain.
Paramount+ dropped a preview for the third season at New York City Comic-Con last October, and it gave a small look at what fans can expect when the new season begins. It picks up immediately after the end of the previous season finale, in the heat of an intense space battle. In a visual callback to some of the most memorable space action in Season 1 and 2, this preview of Season 3 featured the crew of the Enterprise engaged in a multi-pronged battle with the Gorn. The new trailer promises that the conflict with the Gorn will reach a long-awaited conclusion this season, but they will also be embroiled in a new conflict with an entirely new enemy.
While the Enterprise and crew are safe for the most part with Pike as their captain, they will not have it easy for the next season. The show will resolve the story with the Gorn, but they will also be dealing with a new villain this season that will force them to their breaking points, challenging their allegiances and forcing them to be as brave and strong as they have ever been. Season 3 will also feature the return of the concept of episodes in the series that break away from traditional Trek storytelling, instead telling a “faith and duty” story, as well as an episode focused on romance, comedy, and a mystery.
Paramount+ also noted that fans can expect even more shifts in genre than fans have seen from Trek series in the past.
Cast and Characters
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will feature the return of the main and recurring cast members who have appeared in the previous two seasons. In addition to the regular cast, the third season will also have a few new familiar faces, including Cillian O’Sullivan. O’Sullivan will be joining the cast as Dr. Roger Korby, who is a legacy character from Star Trek: The Original Series that was previously portrayed by Michael Strong.
In the timeline of Strange New Worlds, Korby is a decorated archaeologist and medical archaeologist who is the long-lost fiancé of Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush). Chapel, of course, has found love with Spock (Ethan Peck), so Korby’s unexpected return will certainly stir up some trouble. A few other recognizable faces that will also be appearing in the third season are Rhys Darby and Patton Oswalt, both of whom have previous experience with Star Trek and have been known for their brand of comedic stylings. As teased in the trailer, the third season will also feature these kinds of genre-shifting episodes. The April teaser trailer made note of these episodes, with potential story ideas that ranged from the traditional action-oriented Trek stories to more silly side stories that are more in line with a buddy-cop or buddy-comedy kind of show. The new trailer dropped earlier today is in line with this description as it shows several scenes from the Enterprise crew engaging in downtime and bonding activities, as well as these potential romantic entanglements mentioned before, and even one scene involving some science gone wrong.
A new addition to the trailer is a brief but potentially interesting and foreshadowing appearance by James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley). While it is not yet clear what Kirk’s full role will be in the story or events of Season 3, the trailer shows Kirk for a moment in the captain’s chair. Pike gives Kirk some words of wisdom as the younger man is strapped into the captain’s chair, “The choices you make in that chair, they are yours to make and yours to live with.” While the connection is not yet made, this is certainly an interesting moment for the character, and with his past and lineage, it will not be the last we have seen of Kirk.
The trailer closes with a rare comedic moment for the show, involving Spock and Oswalt’s Vulcan. Spock is shown mid-way through the comedic two-step of a “high five” with the Vulcan asking to go “down low.” When Spock’s hand is high enough, Spock completes the gesture with a “too slow” move. The confused Vulcan then asks, “Why would you do that?” to which Spock, in the cold, dry humor for which he is famous, replies, “Because you are too slow.”
Premiere Date
Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will premiere on Paramount+ on Thursday, July 17, 2025. Episodes will be released on a weekly basis every Thursday through the season finale on September 11, 2025.
Season 4 of the series has already been confirmed by Paramount+ and is in active development. The series has become one of the most popular and well-received Trek shows among both veteran fans of the franchise and the new generation that has been joining the Trek fandom in recent years.
