In June, a love triangle among teenagers turned deadly in South Carolina, according to the state’s authorities. The summer incident left one 16-year-old dead and nine Myrtle Beach-area teenagers facing criminal charges for his murder.
Trey Dean Wright, 16, of Johnsonville, was shot and killed, the Florence County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) said in a statement. Wright was identified as the victim and was found with multiple gunshot wounds on June 24 on First Neck Road, about 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
“The FCSO was called to the area and found the victim deceased at the scene,” the law enforcement office said. “Deputies responded to the scene and can confirm the victim was pronounced dead.”
Day Later, Teen Suspect Arrested
The next day, on June 25, 19-year-old Devan Scott Raper, of Conway, was arrested by investigators on suspicion of murder, the FCSO said.
Raper is accused of shooting and killing Wright “after an argument between the two males,” the FCSO statement reads. “The argument was in part over a girl.”
According to the news release, at least one of the people at the scene of the crime “was recording the incident with their cellphone.”
On June 26, the FCSO said it had learned that Wright’s girlfriend, 17-year-old Gianna Kistenmacher of Myrtle Beach, was one of the people charged in connection with the crime.
The FCSO said in a statement that Kistenmacher was “charged as an accessory before the fact” and is accused of “transporting Raper to the incident location with the knowledge that he possessed a firearm and the ability and the intent to cause bodily injury to her boyfriend.”
In a local television interview, Major Michael Nunn, a spokesman for the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, told WBTW-TV that Kistenmacher, Raper and other teenagers are facing charges for their alleged roles in the June 24 shooting.
“They were complicit in bringing the armed co-defendant, Raper, to the incident location and knowing that there would be a confrontation,” he said. “They knew that Raper had presented a firearm to the victim and made threats to shoot him, according to the arrest warrants.”
All five suspects are being charged as adults under state law, authorities said.
In the weeks since the shooting, law enforcement has expanded its investigation and arrest more teens in connection with the killing.
On Wednesday, prosecutors said they would seek murder charges against 18-year-old Hunter Kendall and Corrine Belviso and 17-year-old Sydney Kearns, all of whom are from the Myrtle Beach area.
Nine teens have now been charged in connection with Wright’s death. In addition to murder charges against four of the suspects, prosecutors are pursuing charges of accessory before the fact, accessories after the fact and other lesser charges that authorities said could include charges of acting as lookouts or failing to prevent the killing.
The charges in the case are being brought under what is known as “the hand of one being the hand of all” law in South Carolina, Nunn said.
Mom Vows to Fight for Justice for Son
Wright’s mother, Ashley Lindsey, has vowed to continue to fight for justice for her son in the wake of the June 24 shooting.
“It’s been emotionally hard. The last three weeks have just been a whirlwind,” Lindsey told Fox News Digital in an interview. “It’s a lot to deal with. All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy.”
In the wake of Wright’s death, his mother has started a GoFundMe page that has raised over $7,000.
The fundraising page features an undated photograph of the teen, who is smiling while posing with a snake draped over his shoulders and chest.
“The World Has Lost an Angel,” the fund-raising page for Wright reads. “Please help me with any donations and my love. I can’t believe you’re really gone. I will never be okay. All my heart is broken.”
Teen Shooter: Shooting Was Over Girl
Sheriff T.J. Joye of Florence County, where the shooting occurred, said that the case highlights the futility of young people fighting over a girl.
“The circumstances as we know, they had issues with each other, and it was over a female,” Joye said during a news conference. “The sad thing is, you got a 16-year-old that lost his life. You’ve got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life. Over what?”
As of this week, Raper, the alleged shooter, is being held in jail with no bond. Kendall is also being held with no bond.
Belviso and Kearns were released on $20,000 surety bonds while they await trial.
Attorneys for the nine suspects have not responded to a request for comment from Fox News. Prosecutors also declined to discuss the details of the case or the charges against the nine teenagers but confirmed to the news outlet that all of them have been charged with felonies.
