Foundation Season 3 Set to Premiere July 11 on Apple TV+
Apple TV+ has released the official trailer for the third season of Foundation, its big-budget, visual-effects-heavy adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation sci-fi novels. Trailer notes include “a new crisis, one of unthinkable proportions” and a galactic showdown. Meanwhile, a new character from the Asimov universe, Foundation’s evil counterpart, called The Mule, will take center stage.
The third season, expected to release weekly from July 11 through September 12, 2025, further explores a galaxy teetering on the edge of crisis. This is also the case with the first and second seasons of the Foundation, which feature huge time-skips that make each story arc play out over centuries. As per the finale of season 1, there was a time leap of 138 years ahead of the premiere of season 2, and as per the finale of season 2, the events of the next season are to take place 152 years later. As for the plot, the second season focused on the Second Crisis, which marked a pivotal point in the epic saga involving an imminent war between the Foundation and the powerful Galactic Empire. In season 2, the Foundation took a different and darker approach to weaponizing religions through its orators to gain influence and power. The show also introduced a group called the “Mentalics,” a secretive colony that comprised members with psionic powers.
However, going by the trailer, season 3 is set 152 years after the finale of season 2, during what is commonly known in Asimovian lore as the Third Crisis. The synopsis from Apple TV+ reads: “Foundation is now an entrenched empire in its own right, its influence has only grown since its more humble beginnings. At the same time, the once-mighty Cleonic Dynasty has begun to show signs of weakness. These two mighty powers that can no longer stand each other find themselves coming together to face a foe that could wipe both of them out: The Mule, a warlord with vast armies at his command, and even greater power over the human mind.”
The trailer begins with a Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) voice-over: “Centuries ago, when we foresaw the end of the galactic civilization, we created the Foundation to save humanity. But this was always the turning point.” Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell), a character that has gained prominence with each season, adds: “We’re out of time.”
Apple TV+’s teaser shows the new show villain, named The Mule (Pilou Asbæ k), in all his glory. The mysterious character says, “I can make enemies into allies. Hate into love.” He adds: “It only takes a little nudge.” In the trailer, the Mule can be seen throwing away military bases, and he has the power to influence other characters. The trailer also sees explosions, battles, and city collapses.
Returning cast members include Lee Pace as all three clones of Emperor Hari Seldon (Brother Day, Brother Dawn, and Brother Dusk), Cassian Bilton as Semley/Marcia, and Terrence Mann as Ashmead. Jared Harris, who stars as Hari Seldon, and Lou Llobell (Gaal Dornick) and Laura Birn (Eto Demerzel) also return for the third season.
Season 3 Cast Expansion
Season 3 of Foundation sees more cast members added to the series. Season 3 cast additions include Alexander Siddig as Dr. Ebling Mis, who is a zealous disciple of Hari Seldon, known for his unconventional and self-taught psychohistory skills. There’s also Troy Kotsur, who plays Preem Palver, a figurehead who leads a planet of psychic warriors. Cherry Jones stars as Foundation ambassador Quent. Other cast additions for the third season include Brandon P. Bell as Han Pritcher, Synnøve Karlsen as Bayta Mallow, Cody Fern as Toran Mallow, Tómas Lemarquis as Magnifico Giganticus (a flamboyant performer), Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing as Song, and Leo Bill as Mayor Indbur.
Season 3: A Threat to the Galaxy’s Future?
At the heart of the Foundation franchise is the concept of “psychohistory,” Asimov’s idea of using math and sociology to predict large-scale events. However, with The Mule’s rise, season 3 is also set to question this. After all, if humans can be manipulated through their emotions, then even statistical modeling based on human behavior may be flawed. Can a calculated science of the future deal with a power that operates outside the rules?
For what it’s worth, the trailer for season 3 of Foundation is promising. From the visuals to the story beats teased in the trailer, the season is shaping up to be one of the franchise’s most exciting yet. The trailer is packed with explosions, space battles, and planet-wide destruction. While visuals and production are the bread and butter of a space opera like Foundation, the trailer’s emotional stakes are more palpable. It will be fascinating to see if the Empire and Foundation can put aside their differences. Psychohistory could also be in serious trouble. If the Mule can change the human heart, what does that mean for a science that assumes people will act rationally?
Season 3 looks to be doing the same with even bigger stakes, richer characters, and more ambitious world-building. With a first episode release on July 11, viewers have a long time to wait, but if previous seasons are any indication, there’s a lot to look forward to. If the previous seasons were about the setting up of the Seldon Plan, season 3 is all about whether that plan can withstand the impossible. The Mule may not only present a threat to galactic peace – it may also be the one to tear down the very notion that humanity’s future can be predicted.
