Invasion Season 3 brings all the main characters together for the first time
Invasion, Apple TV+’s ambitious new sci-fi drama, might’ve flown under the radar a little in recent months. This is in large part thanks to the service’s other new shows, Silo and Foundation. Even before the debut of the series, fans and critics alike worried that it would get lost in the mix. While a cult following is possible, Invasion has found itself the subject of more mixed reviews than any of its initial offerings, and for several good reasons. It especially suffered early on from a slow-burn pacing that did more to alienate viewers than the mysterious green-skinned aliens. Even die-hard fans will often acknowledge that they’ve had a love/hate relationship with the series.
However, there’s no doubt that Invasion has some positive qualities. Its cinematography has frequently been nothing short of awe-inspiring. The filmmakers have always aspired to bigger, bolder, and more thought-provoking themes, even if the delivery has sometimes missed the mark. Thankfully, it seems like the show might be ready to step into its true stride with the third season.
Apple TV+ has released a trailer for Invasion Season 3, and the look of the upcoming season is perhaps the most promising yet. David Weil (Hunters) created the sci-fi show, and he’s worked closely with producer Simon Kinberg, who is known for working on several X-Men franchise installments as well as for producing and writing the Oscar-nominated The Martian. The basic premise has always been enticing: an alien invasion seen through the eyes of the everyday people living around the world. In addition to English, the Invasion series uses Japanese and Pashto to tell a uniquely human story with a global scope.
Season 1 largely centered on the beginning phases of the alien threat. The beings themselves were often not even part of the scenes, and most of the drama had to do with the relationships between characters. The implications of the menace were all around, but that didn’t stop some of the audience from feeling disappointed. Fans who were looking for a more action-heavy show with lots of scenes directly involving the aliens were often left frustrated. However, this was a stylistic choice that set the series up as a more intimate, personal sci-fi story.
The first season finale left viewers with the full alien invasion, which had become unavoidable. Season 2 began a bit more directly with the new status quo, and the action and higher stakes ramped up. This was a shift that breathed new life into Invasion as it went about the work of showing how the main characters survived and even thrived after the world was changed beyond all recognition. Humanity had been forced into a series of small, contained safe zones, and most people were willing to do whatever it took to survive. While the pacing was still methodical, the overall story moved more rapidly, which bodes well for the setup of Season 3.
Season 3 Brings Together Characters for High-Stakes Alien Invasion
Season 3 of Invasion picks up two years later and finds that the threat has taken terrifying new turns. The official premise of the new season promises the collision of perspectives that have previously been largely separate. Many of the main characters were spread throughout the world in Seasons 1 and 2, but in the third season, they will unite for a high-stakes mission. The Invasion team will come together to attempt to breach the mothership.
This will be the biggest change in focus for the show, which has spent so much time to this point centering on separate stories that take place in different parts of the world. The threat has also become more dangerous, with the aliens reaching the “apex” of their evolution. Deadly tendrils will shoot from their mothership and extend in all directions, making the stakes as clear as they can be: only through the combined skills, talents, and resolve of the survivors can humanity hope to protect itself. Preparations for the mothership mission will be underway, but new friendships will develop, while old relationships will be put to the test.
The returning cast includes: Golshifteh Farahani as Aneesha Malik; Shioli Kutsuna as Mitsuko Yamato; Shamier Anderson as Trevante Cole; India Brown as Jamila Hudson; Shane Zaza as the tech entrepreneur turned public pariah Nikhil Kapur; and Enver Gjokaj as Clark Evans. Erika Alexander is a new main character in Season 3 of Invasion, as she has joined the main cast in a series regular capacity.
Invasion Season 3 has the chance to tie up a lot of loose ends while also delivering on the action and alien content that the show’s audience has been waiting for from the start. There’s also an opportunity to present a level of spectacle and high stakes that can match a global alien invasion, without forgetting the deep character work that sets this series apart from similar titles.
Invasion Season 3 will premiere August 22, 2025, on Apple TV+. Longtime fans and new viewers are about to see whether or not this high-concept global sci-fi epic can deliver on a thrilling and emotional level.
