Major Auto Insurance Fraud Crackdown in New York

New York authorities have arrested 16 individuals for their alleged roles in auto insurance fraud schemes totaling nearly $500,000 in attempted fraudulent claims around the state. The announcement was made on Tuesday by Governor Kathy Hochul's office.

Breakdown of Arrests by County

Of the 16 arrests, seven occurred in the Bronx, representing the highest concentration in any single county. The other arrests were connected to cases in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Suffolk, Onondaga, Monroe, and Erie counties, demonstrating the statewide reach of these fraud schemes.

Scope of the Charges and Investigations

The cases resulted in a total of 31 criminal charges, which include 29 felony counts and two misdemeanor counts. These arrests are part of ongoing, joint investigations conducted by New York State Police and the state's Department of Financial Services. Officials noted that additional investigations related to insurance fraud are underway.

Impact of Insurance Fraud and State Response

Governor Hochul emphasized the consequences of auto insurance fraud for New Yorkers, linking schemes such as staged crashes and fraudulent claims to rising insurance premiums. She stated, “I have no tolerance for any individuals who commit fraud in ways that drive up costs for others or abuse public dollars for their own personal gain. And I've used every tool in my arsenal to stop exactly that.”

The state has responded to the issue by expanding criminal penalties to target not only those directly involved in staged car accidents but also individuals who organize these fraudulent events. Oversight of auto insurance rates has also been strengthened as a part of broader insurance reforms.

Staged Crashes and Fraudulent Claims

Governor Hochul cited a specific December 2025 incident in Brooklyn, where investigators allege that a driver deliberately cut in front of another vehicle at an intersection, causing a crash. The driver then reportedly falsely accused the other motorist of running a stop sign and collected more than $16,000 in medical insurance claims. That driver was among those arrested and charged with insurance fraud and related offenses.

The governor highlighted a significant rise in staged crashes linked to fraudulent claims, stating that New York has experienced a triple-digit percentage increase in these incidents over the past five years. In 2023, the state recorded 1,700 staged crash cases, the second-highest total in the country.

Reducing Auto Insurance Rates Through Reform

Governor Hochul expressed optimism that the recent arrests, combined with insurance reforms achieved in the latest state budget, will contribute to lowering auto insurance rates in the near future. She stated, “Now, by taking down these individuals, we expect that — as well as the insurance reforms that we were successful in securing in our latest budget — those combined will start to lower auto-insurance rates in the near term.”

Continued Efforts Against Insurance Fraud

The crackdown reflects ongoing efforts by state officials to address auto insurance fraud. With additional investigations underway and expanded criminal penalties in place, New York aims to curb staged crashes, fraudulent claims, and other forms of car accident fraud that affect both insurance premiums and public trust.
