Free 2-K Program to Expand Across New York City

New York City’s free 2-K program is set for a major expansion in the upcoming fall, reaching all five boroughs and serving every school district in the Bronx and Staten Island. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul made the announcement on Monday, highlighting the city’s ongoing efforts to increase early childhood education and childcare access for families.

Significant Growth in Access for NYC Families

The expansion of the free 2-K program will give more than 12,000 children access to public preschool, a dramatic increase from the 2,000 children who participated during this year’s initial rollout. Once the expansion takes place next fall, 22 of New York City’s 32 school districts will be included in the program.

Mayor Mamdani, speaking at a news conference, described the initiative as “truly historic,” emphasizing that the program is expected to save parents more than $25,000 per child per year while giving children a strong early educational foundation.

Support for Parents and Broader Impact

During the announcement, Mayor Mamdani remarked, “Next year, when placements are announced, families in the Bronx, on Staten Island, across our city will feel an enormous weight lifted off their shoulders.” He added that the expansion ensures that more families can remain in their communities without making sacrifices in their careers or relocating due to childcare difficulties, reinforcing New York City’s commitment to supporting working parents.

Expansion Details: Increased Coverage in Multiple Districts

The program will add seats in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens while also increasing capacity in the initial launch districts: Manhattan’s District 6, Bronx’s District 10, Brooklyn’s Districts 18 and 23, and Queens’s District 27. The mayor’s office confirmed that next fall’s expansion would cover all of Staten Island and every school district in the Bronx.

A full list of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens school districts receiving free 2-K seats for the first time includes:

  • Manhattan: District 4 (East Harlem, Randall’s Island), District 5 (Central Harlem, East Harlem, Manhattanville/West Harlem, Morningside Heights, Hamilton Heights/Sugar Hill)
  • Brooklyn: District 16 (Bedford-Stuyvesant, parts of Crown Heights and Ocean Hill), District 17 (Crown Heights, Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Flatbush, East Flatbush, and parts of Erasmus, Brownsville, Ocean Hill, and more), District 19 (East New York, New Lots, Cypress Hills, and surrounding areas), District 20 (Bay Ridge, Fort Hamilton, Sunset Park, Kensington, and others), District 21 (Coney Island, Brighton Beach, Midwood, and parts of Borough Park), District 32 (Bushwick, parts of East Williamsburg and Bedford-Stuyvesant)
  • Queens: District 24 (Corona, Elmhurst, Ridgewood, and surrounding neighborhoods), District 28 (Rego Park, Forest Hills, Jamaica, Richmond Hill, and others), District 29 (Queens Village, Cambria Heights, Hollis, Laurelton, Rosedale, and adjacent areas)

Context: Broader Push to Expand Childcare Access

This nyc 2k expansion aligns with the Mamdani administration’s larger goal of enhancing childcare access. Earlier this month, city officials moved more than 10,000 children off a waitlist for free childcare vouchers. These efforts signal a broader commitment to making early childhood education more accessible across New York City through new funding and program growth.

Next Steps and Further Announcements

The city has stated that additional details about the 2-K application timeline will be released in the coming weeks, ensuring families have clear guidance on how to apply for the program. As New York continues to invest in public preschool and education funding, thousands more children and their families will benefit from improved opportunities and support in the next academic year.
