New Indictment in FIT Student’s Death
Prosecutors have filed new charges in the case of a Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) student who died earlier this year after being allegedly poisoned with fentanyl inside a campus dormitory, shining a spotlight on campus safety concerns. The developments follow events that occurred in March, when two women were hospitalized after being given drugs by a fellow student.
Allegations Against Moises Freire
Authorities allege that 19-year-old FIT student Moises Freire distributed fentanyl to two women, claiming it was cocaine. According to prosecutors, Freire encouraged the two women to take the substance but did not ingest it himself. Both victims lost consciousness shortly afterward.
Intent to Commit Rape Charge
The new indictment against Freire includes charges of distributing drugs with the intent to commit rape. According to Christopher Roberts, Special Agent in Charge at the Drug Enforcement Administration's New York office, investigators determined that the drug was not cocaine laced with fentanyl but was pure fentanyl. "It was straight up fentanyl," Roberts stated.
Aftermath and Response from Authorities
Investigators say Freire waited approximately 45 minutes before seeking help, during which time he sent photos of the unconscious woman to others. When he finally contacted campus security, Freire reported that the women had simply "drank too much and passed out," which officials later established was false. FIT security personnel administered Narcan, which revived one woman. Sadly, the other student never regained consciousness and later died.
Additional Drug Conspiracy Charges
Both Freire and his alleged supplier, Brian Peralta Cabrera, face drug conspiracy charges related to the incident. Authorities cited text messages in which Freire referred to the substance as "poison," indicating awareness of its potential danger.
Campus Reaction and Safety Measures
The incident has prompted concern among the FIT student body. Freshman Estefania Bale expressed worries for her personal safety but acknowledged the presence of around-the-clock campus security. Sophomore Kayla Barbier noted that although the college is working to improve security, students desire more information, especially since the tragedy occurred in a residence hall where many freshmen live.
Official Response from FIT
In response to the incident, FIT administration informed students via email that safety protocols and training have been strengthened. The college has increased security measures as public attention on the case continues to grow. Freshman Marina Friscia commented that the tragedy was more reflective of broader societal issues rather than the school itself, stating, "I think it can happen anywhere, like it’s been happening [in] so many places. I think it’s more of a reflection of our generation."
Continuing Investigation and Community Impact
The investigation into the circumstances of the FIT student death remains ongoing, with authorities emphasizing the importance of awareness around drug poisoning and campus safety. The case has drawn attention to the risks associated with fentanyl and the importance of timely intervention, such as the administration of Narcan in overdose situations.
